Northallerton, Thirsk & James Herriot

A morning visit to the market town of Northallerton. There has been a settlement at Northallerton since Roman times, however its growth in importance began in the 11th century when King William II gifted land to the Bishop of Durham. Under the Bishop's authority Northallerton became an important centre for religious affairs. It was also a focus for much conflict in subsequent years between the English & the Scots, most notably the Battle of the Standard, nearby in 1138, which saw losses of as many as 12,000 men.

Thirsk is a friendly market town that is large enough to be diverse, but small enough to have community and to care. Thirsk has been made famous because of its links with James Herriot. Like millions worldwide, you’ve probably read his books or watched All Creatures Great and Small, or maybe you’ve heard of James Herriot on the TV series The Yorkshire Vet.

Walk through his fully-restored 1940s home and surgery in Thirsk; travel back in time to what life was like when James was practicing. See the car he drove, step into the TV set, try your hand at being a vet, plus so much more including interactive games for Herriot fans of all ages. A visit to the World of James Herriot is something you will never forget.
