Yorkhire Dales via the Buttertubs Pass
The Yorkshire Dales National Park is in northern England. It encompasses thousands of square miles of moors, valleys, hills and villages. Visit some of the most stunning scenery in our very own Yorkshire with stops en route for photographs and to wander around some of the peaceful villages. You are guaranteed to brush off the cobwebs and take in the clean and refreshing air surrounded by the rolling hills of God's Own Country!!
There are many high roads and passes in the Yorkshire Dales with fantastic views of the surrounding valleys and fells, but perhaps the best known is Buttertubs Pass. This road crosses the high moorland between Wensleydale and Swaledale - from the small market town of Hawes over to the hamlet of Thwaite.
The story goes that as farmers rested at the top of the climb on a hot day - on route to the market in Hawes - they would lower the butter they had produced for sale into the limestone potholes, which gave the pass its name, to keep it cool.
